Allergic
disorders rank number one among children’s chronic diseases. Simply
eating peanut butter, shrimp or milk can leave some children vomiting,
gasping for breath, or covered in hives. According to researchers,
nearly 4 million people have a true food allergy, and it's critical for
people who have allergic reactions to identify and avoid the foods that can
cause severe illness.
An estimated 6 percent of American
children under the age of 3 have at least one food allergy, and it's only
through the vigilance of parents and child care providers that the allergies
are first identified and the source avoided. One of the simplest
pro-active steps to protect children from harmful allergic reactions is to
provide them with a medial bracelet that clearly identifies their allergy.
This form of identification lowers a child’s risk of anaphylaxis.
While most allergies are not
life-threatening, allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis can be deadly when
not treated in a timely manner. Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic
reaction that affects several parts of the body at the same time.
While external symptoms may manifest themselves as a rash or hives,
simultaneous internal reactions are occurring, which may affect the stomach,
lungs, or heart.
Anaphylaxis is most often caused by
exposure to the following:
- Foods such as nuts, shellfish,
milk or eggs
- Stings from a bee, wasp, hornet,
yellow jacket, or fire ant
- Latex, which can be found in
elastic waistbands or kitchen gloves
- Medications such as antibiotics,
aspirin, or muscle relaxants
Symptoms of anaphylaxis mimic
symptoms of other illnesses, so it's vital that children and adults with a
history of allergies be quickly identified and treated. The key to
treating anaphylaxis is the administration of epinephrine, however virtually
all deaths associated with anaphylaxis are caused by epinephrine not being
administered in time. Therefore, emergency personnel are trained to
look for medical alert jewelry such as
medical id necklaces or
bracelets.
By carrying auto-injectable
epinephrine pens (known as Epi Pen's) at all times and informing care-givers
and teachers about a child’s allergic condition, parents of young children
can prevent life-threatening allergic occurrences; however,
medical bracelets are an essential identification device to alert
paramedics and EMT's of your child’s allergy. The word Allergies
should appear on the front of the bracelet, and if there's room, the most
serious allergies should also appear on the front. If not, the
allergies should be engraved on the back of the bracelet, along with mom or
dad's cell phone number. Although paramedics typically look on both
sides of a medical id bracelet, it's always best to add the words 'See Other
Side' if important information will appear there. Your child's medical
id bracelet is the most effective way of ensuring early detection and
appropriate treatment, especially if you aren't there when an allergic
episode occurs.
