What Should I Engrave on a Cerebral Palsy Medical Bracelet?

27th May 2022

Understanding Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a chronic condition that presents in a complex group of disorders affecting the brain and nervous system varying in type and severity. If an emergency were to occur while you’re away, how can you protect your loved one? A medical alert bracelet can provide emergency staff with a baseline for conditions related to the Cerebral Palsy such as non-verbal, hearing impaired, and non-ambulatory.

The main type of movement affected classifies Cerebral Palsy. Different impacted areas of the brain cause the variation in the movement disorders.

  • Stiff muscles (spasticity)
    • Spastic CP is the most common type affecting about 80% of people.
  • Uncontrollable movements (dyskinesia)
  • Poor balance and coordination (ataxia)

Issues with movement and posture are inevitable for people with Cerebral Palsy. Related conditions include:

  • intellectual disability
  • seizures
  • problems in vision, hearing, and speech
  • spinal complications (like scoliosis)
  • joint problems (like contractures).

Some people with CP are non-ambulatory while others walk with braces or other assistive equipment, some are verbal, and others are not.

Most cases, roughly 85%, of Cerebral Palsy develop in the womb (congenital CP), though the specific cause is unknown. Some people develop Cerebral Palsy (acquired CP) by brain damage that occurs during infancy from brain bleeds, infections, injury, or sometimes jaundice.

Early signs of CP vary depending on the type and level of disability, but usually, show in motor milestone delays:

  • Rolling over
  • Sitting
  • Standing
  • Walking

What should I engrave on my Cerebral Palsy Medical ID Bracelet?

The best way to keep someone in your life with CP safe is with medical jewelry. By providing your loved one with CP a medical alert bracelet, you can help prevent unnecessary tests and expedite communication between emergency staff. For someone with CP who’s taking multiple medications, medical jewelry could prevent fatal drug interactions.

The 4 most important pieces of information for a medical ID are:

  • Condition
  • Allergies (if any)
  • Name
  • Emergency Contact Number

For chronic conditions, it’s important to list any additional (co-occurring) conditions that could affect treatment in an emergency.
